Wekiva Island
Don’t get this confused with Wekiwa Springs because Wekiva Island is not your typical state park. Its the vacation resort version of the Florida State Park. Located at the edge of Wekiwa Springs, this place is a revamped version of its former shadow. Just a few years ago there was a parking lot with a small shack where you could get maybe a few snacks, some fish bait, and rent a canoe……………….that was it. Now its been described by some as a small party oasis in the Seminole County area. Wekiva Island is just up the stream from Wekiwa Springs, and its only a small 15 to 20 minute drive North of Orlando. Its a great place where you can go swimming in the cool fresh water springs and also enjoy their bar and restaurant on location. There’s even seating there on the water with couches and cabanas where visitors can hang out and order food and drinks as well. Its a great place for both the summer and winter months. Then again its Orlando, so even our Winter months feel like summer months to some of our friends from up North.
In the Summer months on a nice day on the weekend both Wekiwa Springs and Rock Springs at Kelly Park will reach visitor capacity by late morning. So instead of waking up at the crack of dawn, join the party and relaxed atmosphere at Wekiva Island. Wekiva Island will give you a piece of natural bliss with water to swim in, outdoor amenities, kayaks, canoes, and posh outdoor seating to hang out in. Its a great way to enjoy the outdoors in Orlando. Best of all, it will only cost you a $1 to get in.
Special Unlocked Tip: If you want to go to Wekiwa Springs and the park is full, you can go to Wekiva Island and rent a canoe/kayak there and ride into Wekiwa Springs by boat. Its the only other way to get into the parks when they are full, but then again once you get to Wekiva Island, you might not want to leave.
