Each year the Council of 101 transforms the Orlando Museum of Art into a Holiday Wonderland. The Festival of Trees, our major fundraiser for the museum, brings thousands of people to the museum each year. Dozens of Central Florida Businesses and individual Designers sponsor trees and create decadent decorations and displays.</p>
<p>For this year’s theme, “Once Upon A Time…A Fairy Tale Festival”, designers will incorporate the whimsy and tradition of everyone’s favorite fairy tales, along with the latest design trends, as they trim their trees into amazing holiday creations.<br />

<p>First off, if you’re a local in the Orlando area, there are a bunch of places where you can go.  At the same time if you’re located more in the tourist and theme park area of Orlando or don’t mind driving down there, you can find a ton of things to do during a rainy day.  The list of places below is a pretty good mix of activities.  Most of these activities and locations are kid friendly, adult friendly, and family friendly.</p>

The Orlando Science Center is one of Orlando’s premier museums loaded with things to do for families, for adults, and for kids. The Science Center is filled with tons of hands-on exhibits involving space, nature, physics, and technology. Exhibits such as their well-known Nature Works Exhibit recreates an entire ecosystem environment inside the museum filled with salt marches, coral reefs, swamps all which feature their own plants, insects, and animals. Especially if you have kids, you’ll want to check out the Orlando Science Center.<br />

At the Orange County Regional History Center you can see pictures and learn what Orlando was like 100 years ago, or even 50 years ago before Disney World and other development came into play.  There are exhibits displaying Orlando’s natural environment and those featuring Orlando’s progression into the present. Those who think they know Orlando, might be surprised by the history of Orlando.  Learn Orlando’s history in regards to citrus, aviation, military, tourism, different cultures, and much more.  This one can be fun for both kids and adults.<br />

Walk in the main entrance to find fountains of water, high ceilings, and light trendy colors as you walk through seeing internationally renowned retailers throughout. You also have the option of being ultra posh by using the Mall at Millenia&#8217;s valet and concierge services. Stores found at the Mall at Millenia include Abercrombie &amp; Fitch, Gucci, Apple, BabyGap, Ann Taylor, Wentworth Gallery, Louis Vuitton, Macy&#8217;s, Pottery Barn Kids, Cartier, Talbots, Ed Hardy, Tiffany &amp; Co, GUESS, Hugo Boss, J. <p><strong>Florida Mall</strong><br />
The Florida Mall is by far the Orlando areas largest indoor mall.  Its called Florida Mall for a reason, its practically the size of Florida.  Its huge and you could theoretically buy anything you want at this mall.  At over 260 stores and well over a million square feet, customers shop at this mall year round. There&#8217;s always people here whether its Chrismas or in the middle of summer. The major stores include Macy&#8217;s, Nordstrom, JCPenney, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Sears along with stores like Apple, Puma, Pottery Barn, Clarks England, Hollister Co., MAC, Euro Moda, and even M&amp;M Word.  There&#8217;s also a selection of restaurants, over 30 of them, including California Pizza Kitchen, Buca di Beppo, Ruby Tuesday, Salsa Taqueria &amp; Tequila Bar, and even Nordstrom has the Nordstrom Cafe Bistro. Bob Carr Performing Arts Center</strong><br />
The Bob Carr Performing Arts Center in Orlando is one of the main links Orlando locals have to major theatrical productions including Broadway and Off Broadway plays and hosting programs such as Orlando Ballet, Orlando Opera, and the Orlando Philharmonic. Originally developed in 1926, the Bob Carr, as its known to locals was originally names the Municipal Auditorium and was the main venue for city-wide cultural programming. In the 1970&#8242;s it received a major upgrade and was named after Mayor Robert Carr, who apparently was known to people as &#8220;Bob&#8221; hence the reason it is not called the Robert Carr theater.<br />

The movie house has its own bar, called Eden Bar, which allows movie goers and even those just looking to go to the bar enjoy a large private garden with large trees hovering over the park, the bar, and the theater. It’s a very chill but trendy crowd that always make it to Eden Bar.<br />

One popular activity in general is to visit the Gaylord Palms Resort in the South Orlando area.  You can visit there as a guest and take your own tour through the hotel which has a massive atrium featuring different outdoor Florida settings.  They have an indoor nature area showing off the everglades with all types of reptiles crawling.  They also have two other sections one with a Key West theme and one with a St. Augustine theme with boats, shops, and restaurants.   There is a charge for parking, but if you do eat at one of the restaurants you can many times get that fee waived.<br />

Disney Wilderness Lodge Resort</strong><br />
The Disney Wilderness Lodge Resort is basically set up with activities for those camping out nearby in the event the weather is cold or it rains.  One activity you can do is ask the front desk for a hidden mickey find-it sheet.  You can then go on a hidden mickey hunt around the resort.  It’s probably an activity for kids, but it’s guaranteed that adults do it to.  You can also head out to the Villas at Wilderness Lodge Lobby and let you kids see the Carrolwood Pacific train cars on loan from the Disney family.</p>

Many of these activities are terrific, but they can also be expensive and they are normally geared toward those who live out of town. Well, what about the people who actually live and work in Orlando? What do they do when they want things to do in Orlando? Where do they go? And where do they bring their out of town friends and relatives who have already been to the theme parks and want to do something different? Well below is a list of FREE things to do in the Orlando area. Now there are other lists out there where the writers claim that the activities are FREE, but they are really not FREE. That’s because those lists are put together by amateurs, possibly by people who don’t even live in the Orlando area. <p><strong>Park Avenue</strong><br />
Park Avenue is located in the Winter Park area, and the street is filled with tons of boutique shops, restaurants and bars, and a city park to go along with it. There is also a ton of scenery to check out while you are venturing in and out of storefronts and when you’re done walking along the avenue, take a rest on one of the benches in the Central Park, which also runs along Park Avenue. Venturing down Park Avenue has been a long-time favorite of local Orlando residents for decades. Any resident of the Central Florida area should check it out. Most importantly, parking is FREE and venturing along Park Avenue and Central Park is completely FREE.<br />

Nowadays you can find Farmer’s Markets all over the Orlando and Central Florida area at all different times of the week. So just about anyone with any schedule can find a way to make to at least one Farmer’s Market a week. <p><strong>Mead Botanical Gardens</strong><br />
Mead Botanical Gardens, known to many locals as Mead Gardens, is a 50-acre garden located in the heart of Winter Park, and is fewer than 2 miles North of the tip of Orlando. The gardens are filled with a few miles of trails where you can see streams, plants, wetlands and animals. It’s terrific area to walk around, have events, or go for a picnic. While there are other terrific protected gardens and parks that you can go to in the Orlando area, Mead Botanical Gardens is completely FREE. No parking charges and no entry charges. <p><strong>Uptown Altamonte and Cranes Roost Park</strong><br />
Uptown Altamonte and Cranes Roost Park in the Altamonte Springs area of Orlando offers a lot to do. All of it is FREE. Walk or jog around Cranes Roost, or go to Cranes Roost to watch one of their FREE concerts on selected Friday and Saturday nights. Look for listings of Friday Night Live at Uptown Altamonte. You can also enjoy the fountain and light show at Uptown Altamonte. Shows last around 20 minutes and the fountain and lighting is choreographed to music. Shows start at 7pm, 8pm, and 9pm. After that you can venture out for a stroll along Altamonte’s beautiful Cranes Roost Park and walk around the lake.<br />

<p><strong>Orlando Public Library System</strong><br />
Activities for both kids and adults are provided by many of the Public Libraries around Central Florida and Orlando. The Orlando Public Library for example, has weekly storytelling for kids and other activities on a weekly basis. The sessions typically last around 25 minutes and include entertaining story tellers along with short videos. Reservations are required, but are also completely FREE if you’re a library card holder. If you’re an adult, you can also sign up for different educational classes on everything from culture to computers plus you can sign up for book clubs, lectures, and even cooking and handicraft classes at some libraries. Most of the time to reserve a spot, you just need a library card and if you’re a resident in that county&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;&#8230;it’s FREE!<br />

Festivals in Orlando</strong><br />
Orlando area festivals are activities that are also completely FREE! Because Orlando is warm year round, we’ve got a ton of festivals that Orlando area locals can enjoy. The Winter Park, Maitland, and Lake Eola art Festivals just to name a few. Lake Eola itself will be host to dozens of large weekend festivals every year celebrating everything from art and culture to music and special causes. If you look hard enough, you can typically find a festival or some kind of outdoor event just about every week of the year. For most of them you simply park on the street and they don’t even require an admission fee. Hang out and enjoy!</p>
<p><strong>Popcorn Flicks in the Park</strong><br />
Popcorn Flicks in the Park is a program sponsored by the city of Winter Park and the Enzian Theater. The movies are shown on Central Park stage located right off of Park Avenue. Only films that consist of classic, pop culture movies that have a universal appeal to most audiences are shown. Audiences are encouraged to bring blankets, chairs, food and snacks. Families and friends welcome……….bring them along. Showings are generally scheduled for around 7pm, but may not start until sunset.<br />

<p><strong>The Art Walk on Third Thursdays</strong><br />
The Art Walk on Third Thursdays is a popular event in downtown Orlando that takes place off of Orange Avenue in the City Arts Gallery and through a few other gallery venues downtown and in Thornton Park. Every third Thursday of month you’ll find a brand new showing of art featuring different themes, different artists, and their different artworks displayed. These events typically have lots of music, food, fun, and entertainment. It’s a great night out for everyone and more importantly……….it’s completely FREE!<br />

<p><strong>Downtown Winter Garden</strong><br />
If you ever want to get the feel of small town, main street America without traveling too far out of town and without dealing with a bunch of tourists, visit downtown Winter Garden. This oasis of relaxation and charm is right on the doorstep of Orlando not more than 5 minutes from the city limits. What’s more amazing is that most locals don’t even of its existence. Downtown Winter Garden features a section of Plant Street where one can find local restaurants, bars, museums, and parks. The city of Winter Garden also hosts a ton of special events that are FREE for the public to enjoy including a weekly farmer’s market on Saturdays from 9am-2pm, a car show known as the Cruz-N-Car show every 3rd Saturday from 6pm-9pm, and FREE concerts on Fridays from 7pm &#8211; 9pm at the Centennial Gazebo on West Plant Street. <p><strong>Lake Eola Park </strong><br />
Lake Eola Park is located right in the heart of Downtown Orlando. It’s an ideal place to walk around, hang out and people watch. Many locals use it as a venue to walk around, take a jog around the lake, or to simply enjoy the view of nature right next door to urban sprawl. Make sure not to miss the large iconic fountain at the center of Lake Eola surrounded by large shiny buildings in the background. There are nightly fountain shows every night where the fountain turns different colors and music is played to the fountain. Locals can also enjoy the weekly Orlando Farmer’s Market every Sunday from 9am-4pm. There is food, entertainment and even alcohol is served. Lake Eola is also host to some of Orlando’s top festivals, celebrations, concerts, gatherings, and even 5k’s. There’s even a large playground for the kids. Most importantly, to enjoy Lake Eola, you need no park entrance fees……………you can simply show up.<br />

<p><strong>Celebration Art Festival</strong><br />
The Celebration Art Festival will feature food, folks, and fun along with works by over 100 artists from all over the country including many Florida based artists on Saturday and Sunday April 21st and 22nd, 2012. <p><strong>Maitland Spring Festival of the Arts</strong><br />
The Maitland Spring Festival of the Arts, also known informally as the Maitland Art Festival takes place on Friday April 13th from 6pm-9pm, Saturday April 14th, from 9am-5pm, and Sunday April 15th, from 10am-4pm.  Admission is FREE!  Park where you can do it legally or venture into the paid parking lots that will charge you under $5.<br />

<p>Winter Park Paint Out<br />
For something a little different you can check out the Winter Park Paint Out event at the Albin Polasek Museum Sculpture Garden and different areas in Winter Park.  You will be able to check out the paintings and works by local artists as they are being painted.  The works go on display almost as soon as they are dry and completed.  The hours are from 10am-6pm April 23-27, 2012 and 10am-noon April 28th.  Also on the 28th there will be a Paint Out Garden Party where you will be able to meet the artists from 6pm-9pm.  The event is FREE.<br />

<p><strong>Sanford Art Walk</strong><br />
The Sanford Art Walk is a great opportunity to get on Friday night and enjoy art, food, and some light nightlife.  Local galleries will open their doors and display tons of art created by local artists.  The event takes place on April 27, 2012 from 6pm-9pm.<br />
The Sanford Art Walk takes place between 1st street, Magnolia Avenue, and Sanford Avenue.<br />

Orlando City Soccer Club</strong><br />
Check out some games at the Orlando City Soccer Club on April 15th, 2012 where they will take on the Wilmington Hammerheads at 6pm and on April 28th, 2012 where they will play the Richmond Kickers at 7:30pm.  Tickets range from $15 to $25 and the games take place at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium.<br />
